Does NWN work on Windows 7?
I'm currently using my dad's PC (...yea, you can see the pattern, my dad's very reliable ) and the game doesn't work. I'm convinced it's the OS.
What the heck.
Is there a sollution to this or am I doomed to never play again.
PS: I'm having my PC fixed so I will decide what OS to use on that one: XP or Win7 (I wont use vista even if you paid me).
I run Windows 7 64 bit and it seems to work fine, with some graphical tweaks. Make sure your video card's drivers are up to date, and maybe try running the game in XP compatibility mode and as an administrator. If I'm playing in fullscreen, I can't alt tab, so I just stick to windowed mode. Sometimes the game crashes as soon as it gets past the intro cinematic: changing fullscreen=0 to fullscreen=1 in the nwn.ini file, loading a module, then closing and switching back to windowed mode usually fixes this problem.
I never had to run a compatibility mode and it worked out of the box.
The only 'issue' I had.. is that I got severe flickering during transitions.. but that never affected my game play in the least.
Though, for my own sake I stamped an epilepsy warning on my monitor and threw the game into windowed mode. While in windowed mode it exhibited 0 problems.
With that, it works.. it works just fine, hardware pending.
PS: If the game started crashing when it updated to windows 7, perhaps the video driver was updated, if so try to roll back a few versions and see if that fixes the problem. When I got a new graphics card and updated it, nwn ran but no textures would load correctly so the entire game was horribly smooth/blurry and looked terrible. Downgrading my video driver fixed this.
These are some advices that you might wish to try out:
- Reinstall W7
- Run NWN like in XP (or other versions).
- Run it like Adminstrator.
- Don't install it, but start it from a copy on your USB-stick.
- Create a copy of the Main icon, and start it from there
But yeah. Search on the forums. My impression is, that in some versions of W7, no troubles. Others, you'll make it run smoother, but not optimal (I think I tried almost anything, and not just used hours, but days, maybe weeks, to test all the solutions I read on these forums).
It certainly works on windows 7, some folks just need to configure it to run. Try right clicking nwn.exe, going to Properties > Compatability > and tick the boxes 'run as an administrator' and 'run this program in compatability mode for' and choose whatever compatability you prefer.
This is one of the main issues everyone has or had, including myself. I couldn't play on windows 7 for a while, until Scholar_Midnight helped me out.
You also need to configure NwN to run on one processor only, should you have more then one. To do this, you need to go into nwnplayer.ini under [Game Options] there should be a setting called Client CPU Affinity= [insert number here]. My NwN wouldn't work without flaw until I set this to 1.
